A plain-English comparison of the three most common ways to build a business website in India — cost of ownership, flexibility, speed, SEO and who each option suits.
"Should we use WordPress, Shopify or get something custom-built?" is one of the first questions businesses ask us. There is no single right answer — each option is excellent for some businesses and a poor fit for others. Here is how we explain the trade-offs.
WordPress: flexible, familiar and content-friendly
WordPress powers a large share of the world's websites. It is open source, so you are not tied to one provider, and thousands of themes and plugins can add almost any feature.
- Best for: service businesses, clinics, schools, consultants and companies that publish regular content or blog posts.
- Strengths: easy page editing, strong SEO plugins, low starting cost, huge community.
- Watch out for: too many plugins slow a site down and create security risks. A WordPress site needs regular updates, backups and monitoring.
Shopify: the fastest route to selling online
Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform. Hosting, security and payments are handled for you, and you pay a monthly subscription plus any paid apps you add.
- Best for: retailers and D2C brands that want to start selling quickly with a reliable checkout.
- Strengths: polished checkout, inventory and order management, Indian payment gateways and shipping apps, very little technical upkeep.
- Watch out for: monthly app costs add up, and deep customisation of checkout or business logic can be limited compared with a custom build.
Custom website or web application: built exactly around your process
A custom site is designed and coded for your business — for example in Laravel, PHP or React — rather than assembled from a theme.
- Best for: portals, booking systems, marketplaces, dashboards and businesses whose workflow doesn't fit an off-the-shelf tool.
- Strengths: complete control over features, performance and data; no plugin bloat; integrates with your CRM, ERP or internal systems.
- Watch out for: higher initial investment and a longer build. Choose a partner who hands over the source code and documents it properly.
Quick comparison
- Time to launch: Shopify and WordPress are usually fastest; custom builds take longer because everything is designed for you.
- Running costs: WordPress needs hosting and maintenance; Shopify has subscriptions and app fees; custom sites need hosting and occasional development.
- SEO: all three can rank very well. Speed, content quality and technical setup matter far more than the platform itself.
- Ownership: WordPress and custom code can move to any host. A Shopify store lives on Shopify.
How to decide
Start with what the website must do. If its main job is to explain your services and generate enquiries, WordPress is usually ideal. If you sell physical products, Shopify gets you trading fastest. If your website is the product — a portal, platform or tool — a custom build pays for itself.
